Photography
To create is a way of more deeply experiencing and understanding the world around me. My works reveal to me some intangible surprise—a delight or an empathy, often about subjects I assumed I knew well. As a photographer, writer, and, more recently, student of pastels, I’m enchanted by these discoveries, which keep me in conversation with the liminal wonders of the human heart. In my photography, I consider an image unfinished until I make and approve a print. Some artists strive for consistency from print to print, but I embrace the subtle differences that come during the printing process; no two of my prints are exactly alike due to nuances of my creative mood at the time of printing. I take care in selecting archival fine art cotton and rice papers with finishes that enhance the qualities of each piece.

Many of my images are inspired by places I have visited and are personally significant. Many of these places are meaningful not only for their obvious beauty but also for the hidden beauty and the natural phenomenon that transpire for a particular place to exist. I am amazed by the constant changes that need to take place in order for something to live. The four essential elements, Earth, air, fire and water are key to the survival of every living thing. My monotypes and paintings are re-examinations of these places.

My interest in psychology, especially the psychology of personality, is something that finds its way into my drawings, prints and sculptures. Psychoanalytic theory, social cognitive theory and genetics attempts to explain how the personality is formed. My work, at times, tries to depict the outward expression or physiognomy, which illustrates the sum of these factors. We all have creative abilities in various forms. I believe this innate gift is part of our individual personality, linking us to a creative, “collective unconscious”. My attempt is to scratch the surface of these very deep waters and to shine a light into the dark places. Or at the very least, to start a conversation.

Melanie Zibit
Artist
In these fast changing times, Ms. Zibit is inspired to create marble sculptures that speak of the calm and beauty of ancient, classic works. Her pieces capture the sensuous forms found in nature to create a modern statement. . She learned to carve in the marble workshops of Carrara, Italy. For her, carving is a meditative process, requiring focus as one wrong move changes everything. Her award-winning pieces have been displayed in private homes, museums, universities and have been included in publications, such as “100 Artists of New England” and Vermont’s Carving Studio “Carving out a Dream. She has received commissions including honoring the Centennial for the Public Library Middleborough MA and Settlers Green Market Place North Conway New Hampshire. Jay Block, the curator at Bridgewater State University commented, “Ms. Zibit is a rare example of an artist who excels at both the abstract and physical execution of her work. Many artists have great ideas and can’t make them into a physical manifestation. Some have beautiful form but don’t have a clue what they are doing,” Her work is very well done on the conceptual and technical level.”

I work exclusively with photographs. I think that it is great fun to look at ordinary subjects that we all see every day and through the photographic process make the subject very special. I look for the common place and I try to show it to the viewer in an interesting and enlightening way. I think that we all need to appreciate what immediately surrounds us – this is what I try to do with my photography. And I do this hoping that people will begin to see the extraordinary in the ordinary subjects of everyday life. It is possible to do this with any sort of media, but because a photograph, even after alteration, is so realistic I think viewers can recognize and identify with the subject more easily.

Some people categorize photographs according to what they see in them: landscapes, sports, news, still life, portraiture, etc. To me, all photographs document the light at a particular moment, whatever the object(s) they depict. So, the subject of my photographs is the light. The objects are important. I try to render them beautifully, with proper form and balance, but only if the light is right at that moment. I create my photographs with found objects. I pay attention to the natural light where I am, and also the time of day and time of year. Light changes moment to moment, due to the sun’s movement, the weather and season. But, in the cycle of seasons, the sun’s trajectory repeats, spring brings flowers and birds, autumn brings colors, and winter brings ice and snow. For me, the subject is never the object.
