“The Hiker” sculpture
Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson
(September 1, 1924)
Lunenburg St-Main St, Fitchburg, MA 01420
“The Hiker is a statue created by Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson. It commemorates the American soldiers who fought in the Spanish–American War, the Boxer Rebellion and the Philippine–American War. The first version of it was made for the University of Minnesota in 1906,[1] but at least 50 copies were made, and were erected widely across the United States. ‘The Hiker depicts a hero stripped of his parade uniform and shown as a soldier reacting to the challenges of the battlefield.'”

As a Fitchburg resident, I am passionate about bringing positive change to Fitchburg by using this city’s rich history and making beautiful, contemporary art. Over two weeks, I saw the amazing and positive reactions of people thanking us for making this mural. I can attest first hand to the power a colorful, striking mural has on an architectural environment, it literally puts people in a good mood, and that is the first vital step in changing one’s city for the better. “Dedicated to those who perished on September 11, 2001.
Let this Beam from the North Tower of the World Trade Center be a reminder that when terror struck, bravery was defined and a country was united. May the many accounts of Herorism remain in our hearts forever and let this Steal Beam before us serve as symbol of Hope, Freedom and Liberty for us all.

Abolitionist Park Mural
Digi Chivetta
(October 15, 2022)
42-50 Snow St, Fitchburg, MA 01420
“Although I didn’t shy away from the gravity of the subject, you will notice that there are no depictions of chains or enslaved people,” the talented 34-year-old Northborough artist said. “These images only serve to re-traumatize viewers who have already been through too much. Instead, I filled the composition with twirling Egùngùn masquerade dancers adorned with vibrant costumes.” She said Egùngùn masquerades “honor a category of collective ancestors” and the practice originates from Yorubaland, Nigeria. “As a Yoruba Orisa devotee, these are the images that I want Black children to have of their ancestors, not the cruelty that was inflicted upon them,” Chivetta said. “The Egùngùn dancers also represent the rich cultures that we, as Black people, were severed from as a result of the slave trade.” The…mural…features…prominent city abolitionists Benjamin Snow Jr., who the street is named after, his wife Martha Snow Wallace, Theodore Becker, a medic on the side of the abolitionists, the Grimké sisters Sarah Moore and Angelina Emily, and Frederick Douglass, who visited Fitchburg several times and was a major supporter of the movement there. The white abolitionists surround the composition that also includes abolitionist related quotes. “Their stance and clasped hands are a reference to the ‘white shields’ at Black Lives Matter protests,” Chivetta said of the white abolitionists. “I did this to emphasize the importance of white allies in the process of healing the country from the atrocities of slavery.” (Sentinel & Enterprise)

“I was very fortunate to work with the Commonwealth Mural Institute and Fitchburg to create one of the 3 murals currently going up around Fitchburg. The mural that me and my team painted was inspired by the kids who attend the after school Spartacus program at the YMCA. I really enjoyed hearing these kids’ stories and I was inspired to base a positively inspired design around them…I hope that this mural can really inspire the kids in the town to do positive things for themselves and the community.”

It is a global platform for people to share their untold stories and transform messages of personal identity into works of public art. Each INSIDE OUT group action around the world is documented, archived and exhibited online. Over 260,000 people have participated in 129 countries. The INSIDE OUT project has traveled from Ecuador to Nepal, from Mexico to Palestine, inspiring group actions on varied themes such as hope, diversity, gender-based violence, climate change…”

Every year, one week before the annual Fitchburg Forge-In Blacksmith Art & Renaissance Festival, the DPW temporarily install multiple Blacksmith sculptures around downtown. In 2024, the festival was held on Saturday, September 28th at Riverfront Park.
“My husband is a metallurgist and he is one of the founders of the festival, Ashok commissioned an artist in poland to make full sized sculptures, so he owns those. And the Department of Public Works puts them on Main Street for us every year. And that dragon has become kind of the mascot of the festival! And they are very kind enough to move it to the park after that one week.”

“The Nashua River Mural”
Jon Allen & Sophy Tuttle
(August, 17, 2014)
Viewable from Riverfront Park
Back of 65 Laurel St, Fitchburg, MA 01420
When Jon Allen and Sophy Tuttle met with Jerry Beck, it was to discuss ideas for possible mural work. I often hear criticisms about ‘why in Fitchburg, there is nothing going on there.’ My response is always, ‘exactly, those are the very conditions for a palette I want to work with.’ As Jerry started shooting out ideas, he mentioned the work of Marion Stoddart. He told us about this one woman’s initiative to clean up the Nashua River back in the 1960s. As he discussed her amazing activism, I sat on the couch at Chaibos looking at the back of Gamache’s as Sophy sat across from me equally excited by the concept. I abruptly stopped Jerry and said, “We’re doing the mural about Marion Stoddart, and it we are going to put it on the back of Gamache’s.” Jerry and Sophy turned around and saw how ideal the location was, and they also saw how large the building was, but it was perfect seeing is sat along the River Front Park and Nashua River. Back in June the ball started rolling on this, and amazingly the support has been over whelming from the local community. Marion sets such an amazing standard that everyone should look at and be inspired by, and what better way to bring that to the community of Fitchburg than through commemorating her activism through art! Iron Trellis at Riverfront Park
Various Blacksmiths, property of Fitchburg Forge-In, Organized by Achla B Madan, Assembled by Department of Public Works
(Ongoing)
Riverfront Park, 51 Commercial St, Fitchburg, MA 01420
Organized by Achla Designs. Students of Monty Tech, led by instructor Paul Jordan, make the additional panels to expand the trellis for more panels. Submissions by Blacksmiths from the annual Fitchburg Forge-In Blacksmith Festival for the panel competition. The Department of Public Works welds them in place.
“My husband [Ashok Hingorany] and I had donated [the trellis] some years [ago], at the start of the festival. The way we fill it is we ask the [blacksmith] competitors [of the Blacksmith Festival] if they’d like to bring in a pre-done piece.” “And we always base the theme on life around the river…I based it on the quilt idea.”

This 900+ square foot mural was painted in the Summer of 2020 by myself and my colleague Erin Cregg. We collaborated on the artwork design and the implementation of the final product. We wanted to represent the Greek Gods to highlight the Greek community and our own personal interest in Greek Mythology. We knew we wanted to paint diverse characters in this piece it is important all the young people that go to this library get a chance to see themselves in our artwork. We applied for a grant from the Community Development Block Project from Fitchburg and funded this entire project. In our proposal we asked for permission to use the space, showed a timeline, budget, and mock-up concept proposal images. The finished piece came out exactly how we wanted and proved we could do exactly what we proposed only better!

This new sculpture was envisioned to tower over the Fitchburg Art Museum’s outdoor courtyard on Elm Street…For this public art project, the museum and the artist enlisted the help of local high school students.
